Event Recap - The Spring Fury was the first race of the AR season this year in Michigan.  Two races would again be held simultaneously.  The 10 hour race for more experienced teams with longer disciplines and more difficult navigation versus the 6 hour race for more beginner racers.  The field was certainly a who’s who in the 10 hour race as it saw a great turnout of the most prominent teams from around the region.  The weather had called for chance of rain, but it turned out to be a beautiful spring day with no rain, even reaching into the upper 60’s.

The race kicked off at 10am as teams took off on foot on a short half mile field run and back to their boats on Half Moon Lake.  They then headed out on a roughly five mile lake paddle leg.  The unfortunate twist for this leg of the race was that someone from outside of the race stole CP9 from its original location so that by the time teams got to it, it was no longer there.  Most teams spent time searching for this point, even going beyond the foot bridge that it was located on.  This caused a back log in this section of the race and by the time teams finished this section, it was still a virtual dead heat.

Following the paddling leg, teams returned to the central TA at Half Moon and got ready to leave on the bike leg.  Teams would find various CPs located out not too far off the public roads in Pinckney Rec Area.  They made their way clockwise starting by heading south and then around to the north part of the Rec Area where they found several CPs located on the single track.  Then teams began to make their way back down toward the TA.  Their mileage totaled roughly 17 miles over this leg.  Checking in at CP22 in the lead was Ren & Stimpy, Ambush, The Lost Boys and whole host of others just minutes off the lead.

At that point, a 19 point O-course was all that remained in the Fury.  These points were spread throughout Pinckney Rec Area.  Teams were given a new map at this point.  This map was a 1:15,000 SMOC map.  Points were located on ridgelines, hilltops, in depressions and reentrants as well as across and through swamps.  The main challenge of this leg was that there was not a lot of time left in the race at just over 3 hours for the lead teams and those 19 points were going to be difficult to be cleared.

That did prove to be the case.  There was just not enough time for teams to clear this O-course despite the beautiful weather and racing conditions.  Peaceful Fury did the best by coming up with 26 of 29 possible points and finished first overall and in the Male/Male division at 3:29pm.  Bring It made an impressive showing finishing 2nd overall, 1st Female/Female with 23 points at 3:27pm.  Adventure Sports Week was 3rd overall, 2nd  Male/Male, with 22 points at 3:47pm.  Ham and Sausage was 4th, 3rd Male/Male, with 21 points at 3:41pm.  IGOTNOPHOBIA was 5th overall, 1st Solo Female with 21 points at 3:43pm.  The Lost Boys were 6th overall, 4th Male/Male, with 21 points at 3:50pm.  S.L.O. was 7th overall, 2nd Solo Female with 20 points at 3:01pm.  Sam Adams and Eve was 8th overall, 1st in the Coed division, at 3:24pm with 20 points.  4 Ever Lost was 9th overall and 2nd in the Coed at 3:35pm with 20 points.  Rounding out the top 10 was Team 1614, 3rd Coed, at 3:51pm also with 20 points.  Jansen was the first Solo Male, 12th overall, at 3:41pm with 19 points.

Congratulations to all the racers that came out to the Spring Fury 6 Hour Race.  The terrain of Pinckney Rec Area is always fun and this was no different.  It was a bit of a throw back to have a nice central TA that was visited several times throughout the race.  That was a comfort enjoyed by racers and race staff alike.  A big thank you goes out to all of our Sponsors as many racers walked away with great prizing!  Thanks to ARCompass.com for their on site support and to new sponsors 5 Hour Energy and My Sweet Life and long time supporters Hammer Nutrition, Seal Skinz and Zanfel.  We also had fantastic group of super dedicated volunteers that helped this race through from beginning to end and they deserve a special thanks as well.  We also appreciate great cooperation from Pinckney Rec Area who were great to work with as always.
