2009 KMMR RECAP - Conditions can vary quite a bit in early February. Last year had temperatures hovering around 0 and brutal wind chill. This year saw temps in the low 30's and a beautiful sunrise. The challenge of running up and down the ski hills at Pine Knob, however, remain constant. A cold snowy winter had finally subdued and given way to a warming trend a week prior to the race with day time temperatures well above freezing. Cold overnights lead to a hard freeze and very slippery conditions on race morning. Those that wore their Micro-Spikes were very thankful. Those that did not, found their footing very uneasy. The tough course left many racers bailing out at the 4k mark even though they had signed up for 8k. Still, roughly 70 racers came out to enjoy the tough midwinter run. The top finishers walked away with awesome prizes from title sponsor Kahtoola and series sponsors Innov8, Gore, Injinji, Trail Runner and Infiterra Sports sponsors Salomon, Hammer Nutrition and Seal Skinz. And with so many prizes, the raffling went on for some time after prizes had been given out. With $5 from every entry going to charity, we were able to raise $350 for AMVETS. We also had volunteers from the Chris Klug Foundation on-site raising awareness for organ donation. Big thanks to Kahtoola for their strong backing and to Pine Knob for being great hosts and to our handful of volunteers that came out to help w/ the course marking and scoring.
