Event Recap -

Michigan weather in April can be very unpredictable and the weather for the 2008 Spring Fury Beginner race was no exception. Early morning snow flurries made way to afternoon sun, but temperatures struggled into the low 40’s for most of the day. The improved weather conditions made for great race conditions for the 200 participants pushing themselves for 8 hours over the vast terrain of the Yankee Springs Recreation Area.

The 2008 edition of the Spring Fury Beginner race course would start, finish and run through the Long Lake Outdoor Center. This rustic cabin facility provided awesome shelter and warm fires from the cold and wet weather.

At 8:00am on the dot, race directors said, “GO!” as racers started with a ten-point orienteering section. This open land navigation course gave racers a chance to experience some of the great topographically rich terrain of Yankee Springs Recreation Area and challenged teams navigation skills from the start. Racers were only required to get five of these points.

After the trek, racers transitioned back at the Outdoor Center as they picked up their mountain bikes for a 10-mile ride that included over 7 ½ miles of single track on the Yankee Springs trails. While on the fun single track, teams had to collect up to seven checkpoints before exiting the trail and riding back on paved and dirt roads.

After the bike was complete, teams once again made their way back to the Long Lake Outdoor Center to transition to the canoe. Teams had a short quarter mile run down hill to the put-in on Long Lake. Once on the water, they had to gather three points on Long Lake and two points in the larger Gun Lake. Only three of these points were required.

Back from the paddle, racers next had the option to transition one finial time for a five point orienteering course or if time was short, call it a day. All of the points on this final oritenteering section were optional.

Several teams battled it out all day exchanging the lead a several times before the finish. In the end Team Grin and Bare It won the race collecting all 32 points at 2:46pm to the win both the overall and the 2 person Female Division. Brent Dohnal finished 2nd overall and 1st in the Solo Male Division finishing with all 32 points at 2:58pm. Finishing 3rd overall and 1st in the 2 person Coed Division was The Sibs collecting all 32 points at 3:05pm.

Congratulations to all of the teams that came out to test their skills in the cold conditions of the Infiterra Sports 2008 Spring Fury Beginner Adventure Race. The course was definitely tough and pushed the intermediate and beginner racers to their limits.

We want to thank our great group of hardcore volunteers! They braved the cold and wet conditions the entire day. Our races could not be successful without such a dedicated crew!

As always thanks to our sponsors: We had awesome on-site support from Salomon and Suunto. Additionally REI, Jeep, Hammer Nutrition, Seal Skinz, Rail Riders, Zanfel and Superfeet have all long been big supporters and key to our success.
