Event Recap: The 4th annual Spring Fury was split into two days of racing with the Beginner Race being on Sunday. It had nearly 200 participants, most of whom were rookies and first timers. The weather treated the new teams nicely with summer like conditions of a balmy 80° plus and lots of SUN! The course was no disappoint either as it was challenging, yet fast enough to keep the field moving along.

The 8-hour race kicked off at 8:00am with teams beginning with a short trail run to where their bikes had been staged. Then it was either through the park or out to the road en route to hitting CP1 and CP2 before a short bike whack into the Holdridge Mountain Bike Trails of Holly Recreation Area. Team Fraser and Team Large Iguana hit the single track first, but were followed by less than a minute by teams Quagmire, He Made ME Do It and solo racer Jay Jones. A whole bunch of teams came charging behind, as the field was still very close. After three miles of great single track where CP3 and 4 were picked up, the trail led teams out to CP5.

The Beginner Race on Sunday was a subset of the Elite Race on Saturday, so the next points for the race skipped up to CP12 and then on directly to CP21. This nice country road bike section lead the teams into the village of Holly and the Canoe Put In on the Shiawassee River at CP22. This first section of the paddle was identical to the elite race the day before. The river was again fun and challenging as teams had to maneuver through the beaver dams, backwaters, and the windy river. Teams He Made Me Do It and Large Iguana along with solo race Jay Jones were the first on the river. Following by just five minutes were teams Quagmire and Fraser with One Gear Fueled by Beer just another minute back. Coming off the water in Fenton team He Made Me Do It held the lead by just one minute over Jay Jones who was in turn just one minute ahead of Quagmire.

Teams then hit the pavement for a 3-mile road run back into Seven Lakes State Park where they picked up the final Orienteering maps. The final orienteering course was identical to one for the elite racers. It was the same tough 16 point, 10 mile O-course. The lead teams headed out with 4 hours remaining, but the O-course would still be challenging to complete in that amount of time. About ¾ of the field had 3 hours or less to attempt the O-course, while some teams were really behind the eight ball with less than 2 hours to race.

At 43 minutes before the cutoff, Team He Made Me Do It charged in laying claim to the overall victory and the win in the 2 Person male Division, being the only team to sweep the course. Team Quagmire boasted second overall and the best 2 person coed as they obtained all but one checkpoint on the O-course. Team Fraser rounded out the top three overall, missing just 2 CPs, and the second 2 person male team. Jay Jones topped the solos and a 4th overall finish, also missing just 2 CPs. Dirty Steves made the top five and 3rd male-male team, missing 2 CPs also. BADDOG grabbed 2nd, missing 6 CPs, and Revenge of the Three Legged Goat finished 3rd, in the 2 Person Coed Division. Jeff Watters and John Swanberg finished 2nd and 3rd as Solos, 21 minutes apart, both missing 7 CPs. The first 4 person coed team, Below Us, came in with 16 minutes to spare, having missed 10 CPs. Rounding out the 4 person coed were Are We There Yet and Fourshadow, just 4 minutes apart. 2 person female division was lead by Just Call Us Animals, followed by Double Trouble and Dazed and Confused. And the top Solo Females were Kathi Shipley and Becky Borwick. Great Job to all the finishers and all the racers that came out to enjoy the Spring Fury Beginner Race!

As with elite race the day before, there are plenty of Thank You’s for this race as well. First and foremost to our wonderful volunteers, many of who came out for both days of volunteering! Big Thanks to all our great sponsors for putting up a number of great prizes for each division. Jeep was again onsite showing off the new Wrangler and REI was also there giving out free bike tune-ups. Salomon also had a presence with numerous windblades and canopy display. We had lots of support from Smartwool, Seal Skinz, Hammer Nutrition, Lendal, Suunto, Keen, Jetboil, Vasque, Superfeet, and Zanfel. Heavner Canoe Livery was in support supplying boats for those who needed one and again moving boats for race staff too. Just like the day before, great support from them. Thanks to the Village of Holly and to the City of Fenton for the use of their parks along the Shiawassee River and also the Peacock Antique Store in Fenton. A big thank you to Seven Lakes State Park and Holly Recreation Area who were more than accommodating to let us come in a “take over”. They have a great set of rangers and a great park there that we hope everyone appreciates and gets out to visit again soon!
