Race Recap:
On Friday September 22nd and Saturday September 23rd, Infiterra Sports held the 5th annual Adventure Rage 30 hour Adventure Race. The race was hosted out of the beautiful Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort west of the city of Cadillac, Michigan. The impressive course would take the 30 teams and two solo racers through some remote and scenic wilderness areas in the Manistee National Forest. This year’s event featured veteran Michigan adventure racer Cooper Green as a guest course designer for Infiterra Sports. Cooper is an experienced navigator and teams got what they expected with plenty of route choices and navigation throughout the 100+ mile course.

Friday kicked off with racers being treated to a breakfast buffet at the resort. As teams finished eating, the briefing began with some interesting aerial footage and a 3D topographical fly over of the course. Race staff handed out instructions and discussed the course that teams were about to tackle. By 9:00am, the briefing had wrapped up and teams had four hours to prepare gear and finish pouring over their maps for the 1:00pm race start.

The weather forecast called for temperatures in the low 60’s with rain showers throughout the event. However, after some brief sprinkles in the morning, racers lined up in pleasantly dry conditions for the mass race start right at Caberfae Resort. At 1:00pm race staff yelled: “GO!” and off ran energized racers ready to challenge the tough course ahead. The onsite setup of title sponsor Salomon with numerous wind blades and canopies, along with the presence of a helicopter flying overhead to get video footage made the start feel epic for the 90 participants.

The race started on foot with teams charging by Salomon wind blades on their way up the ski slopes to CP1. Racers made quick work of this first on foot stretch. At CP1 racers got an impressive view from the high point on top the slopes and then quickly ran back down for a transition to bikes at Caberfae Resort.

Leaving on bikes for CP2, teams were still very bunched together. Navigating dirt roads and sandy two-tracks, the first team to reach CP2 was the four person coed Northern Michigan Endurance Team (NMET). They were closely followed by a slew of other two and four person teams. Between CP2 and CP3, teams began to separate more as the navigation and the sand became more difficult. CP3 was located at the top of Briar Hill, which is the highest point in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Teams had a grueling climb through deep sand to reach the top. Two-man team the Vultures reached CP3 first closely followed by two other two person teams – Borah Borah and Beaver Squad. The first four person teams to reach the CP where Hafke Legal Services, AGS, and Free Speed. NMET made a navigational error and dropped all the way to 19th place coming into CP3.

From CP3 teams had numerous route choices to reach CP4/TA1. Teams Borah Borah and AGS rolled into TA1 first, but the field was still very tight after this first 30 mile bike leg. From CP4/TA1, teams had a 10 mile trail run down the beautiful Manistee River Trail. The trail is very rugged with many scenic vistas over the river valley. With little navigation for this section, teams could put their heads down and run hard and fast. Teams Vultures and Free Speed did just that as they popped out of the woods and off the trail at CP6 first. From here teams had an eight mile paddle through the Tippy Dam Pond while navigating the coves and islands to find two unmanned checkpoints.

The fastest teams got to do nearly the entire paddle before daylight faded away. However, for the rest of the teams, water navigation became even more difficult as the night was pitch-black with no moon to provide any light. The paddle ended at CP8/TA2 with teams Vultures and Free Speed maintaining their slim lead on the rest of field. With a still very tight race at the top, teams transitioned quickly to the second bike leg featuring over 30 miles of road and two-track riding along with 6-7 miles of single track. Leaving the TA, team Borah Borah was hot on trail of the Vultures in the two person category and team AGS and NMET left only about 20 minutes after Free Speed in the four person category.

As the night wore on, the pace slowed for the racers. Rain showers cropped up, but the temperature stayed mild with lows only reaching the high 50’s. The bike navigation and the single track loop around CP9 proved challenging. This section of the race shook up the top spots with four person teams leading the way into the bike drop at CP10. The first team off the bike was NMET. They regained all the ground they lost between CP’s one and two and had their confidence going again as they left CP10 for the eight to ten mile orienteering course in the dark of night. Following NMET, teams AGS, Free Speed, GRAAR, and the Vultures arrived at CP10 respectively and then headed out on the daunting five Point O-course.

This night O-course proved to be the crux of the race. NMET managed to hold about a 30 minute lead through the hilly terrain and reached CP11/TA3 about an hour before dawn. This score-O section saw only 15 teams get all five CP’s, with many of them going well into the daylight hours of Saturday morning to accomplish this feat. From CP11/TA3, teams had an eighteen mile paddle down the secluded Pine River to CP12. NMET set out first with AGS following about 40 minutes behind. Teams Free Speed and GRAAR followed AGS by 30 minutes and 65 minutes respectively.

During the AM hours of Saturday morning, the clouds broke and rains held off for most of the remainder of the race. After the beautiful Pine River paddle, teams had one last ten mile trekking section through CP’s 13 and 14 with four unmanned orienteering CP’s to find as they made their way back to Caberfae Resort. The top teams showed great navigation and perseverance as none of them made a mistake enroot to the finish in the same order in which they got off the water.

The Northern Michigan Endurance Team comprised of Aaron Litzner, Justin Andre, Bryan Royce, and Heather Compton bested the course in 24 hours 3 minutes. Team AGS was second in 25 hours 2 minutes with team Free Speed rounding out the top three overall and in the four person coed category finishing in 25 hours 26 minutes. The Vultures, comprised Dave Vespor and Kyle Fedler, won the two-person male category in a time of 28 hours 39 minutes. In the two-person coed category, team CNS Motion, comprised of Scott Eveningred and Cally Bukovina took the top honors in 29 hours 44 minutes.

In all, 20 teams and two solo racers completed the course as ranked teams with two more teams finishing unranked. At the post-race banquet, racers raved about the spectacular course and the numerous navigation choices. Teams agreed that the fifth running of this iconic Michigan race continued to raise the bar as they chowed down great post race food and watched video clips of the race they just accomplished.

Great prizes from sponsors Salomon, Moosejaw, Smartwool, Rail Riders, Hammer Gel, and Sealskinz were awarded to the top placing teams. Thank you’s were said and congratulations passed around to all that competed. Finally, exhausted racers retired to the welcome site of cozy rooms at Caberfae Resort as another great weekend of racing concluded.

Infiterra Sports would like to thank the following: Cooper Green for all his excellent work as course designed for the event; All the great volunteers that braved the elements to man CP’s and make the event a great success; Caberfae Resort for hosting the race and providing excellent food and accommodations; Pine River Paddlesports for providing the canoes for the event.
