About The Race:
This will be a challenging 10 hour sprint race in the beautiful area of Pontiac Lake Recreation Area. It will be designed for the intermediate to advanced racer. We want it to truly be an exciting and fun race in classic AR fashion. No support crew will be needed. Teams will be required to navigate each stage of the race using provided pre-marked topographical maps. Navigation difficulty will vary by control point, and we will have some advanced sections in this 10hr course. Each team will be issued a passport that will be punched at designated control points along the way. Teams will be required to carry the gear on the mandatory gear list.
Racer Check In Information & Directions:
Racer check in and registration will be held at the main parking lot. For the park website click here. For a detailed park map click here.
Trekking / Trail Running / Orienteering:
The total trekking will be in the 8-15 mile range - depending on the selected route and number of CP's achieved. The terrain will vary from trails to dense brush, woodlands and swampy lowlands. Teams will always go through a significant off-trail section(s) where navigation will be tested. Maps will be USGS 1:24000 and/or SMOC Orienteering Maps. Maps will be pre-marked with points.
Canoe:
Teams will be paddling 7-10 miles depending on the final course design. Teams are responsible for their own canoes, paddles (standard or kayak), and PFDs. For those that do not have their own canoe (or kayak for solos), we are working with Heavner Canoe Livery to provide rental boats. When you complete your registration form, you will have the option to include boat rental. Rental fee will be $40 per boat (canoe or kayak are same price). Paddles and PFDs will be provided with rental, however, you can use your own equipment instead if you prefer.
Canoes must be open bowed and have two or more actual seats. Canoes may have a maximum length of 19 feet with a minimum width following the ratio of 0.1625 x length. (For example if your boat is 18 ft long it must be at least 35 inches wide. See equipment heading under our race rules, or click here, for the full rule.)Two person teams will paddle in one canoe. Solo racers will paddle in a kayak. The basic requirements for a kayak are that it be a closed cockpit, not inflatable, and not a sit-on-top. Standard sea kayaks, usually around 12-18 feet, with closed cockpits are fine. Check with race staff if you still have questions about your boat being acceptable. In the event that it is too cold for the canoeing stage, it will be replaced with an adequate backup stage with more trekking or biking.
Mountain Bike:
The mountain bike stage(s) will be 15-25 miles in length. Teams must locate and check in at each of the required checkpoints. The course will include a portion of single track with the remaining portion on a mix of two tracks, dirt and paved roads.
Fixed Ropes:
There will not be a fixed ropes section in this race.
