Time & Directions:
This will all take place at the River Hawk Conference Center in Proud Lake Rec Area. This is located just east of the main Park Headquarters and Annex off of Wixom Rd (just east of Garden Rd). See the map of Proud Lake Rec Area. There is not a huge parking lot at the Conference Center, so racers will have to make use of the several lots that are on the way in. (All are within about a ¼ mile) We will have plenty of signs directing you to check in and undoubtedly where to park.
You should plan to arrive at check-in by 7:15am at the latest in order to have everyone through registration so the briefing can begin on time. You need to arrive at registration with all your teammates and go through the process together.
If you are bringing your own canoe/kayak, you need to arrive by at least 7:00am because you will have to stage your boat prior to the Race Briefing.
About The Race:
The Chill is our “just for fun” race of the series. It is a low cost, high fun race to give racers a chance to get out and do something between the big holidays when there is a lack of other events going on. Designed for beginner to advanced sprint competitors, the December Chill will compress a one-day long adventure race into 8 hours. No support crew will be needed. Teams will be required to navigate each stage of the race using provided pre-marked topographical maps. Each team will be issued a passport that will be punched at designated control points along the way. Look for more info about the race as December draws near.
Trekking / Orienteering:
The total trekking will be a minimum of 4 miles - more depending on the selected route. The terrain will vary from trails to dense brush, woodlands and swampy lowlands. Teams will always go through a significant off-trail section where navigation will be tested.
Canoe:
Teams will be paddling 4-6 miles depending on their route. Teams are responsible for their own canoes, paddles (standard or kayak), and PFDs. Heavner Canoe Livery will be providing a pickup and delivery service to the race site. See their website at www.heavnercanoe.com or call (248) 685-2379 to reserve your equipment. In the event that it is too cold for the canoeing stage, it will be replaced with an adequate backup stage with more trekking or biking. Solo racers will be allowed to bring their own kayak as long as it meets certain requirements. The basic requirements for a kayak are that it be a closed cockpit, not inflatable, and not a sit-on-top. Standard sea kayaks, usually around 13-17 feet, with closed cockpits are fine. Check with race staff if you still have questions about your boat being acceptable.
Mountain Bike:
The mountain bike stage(s) will be 15-20 miles in length. Teams must locate and check in at each of the required checkpoints. The course will include a combination of single track, dirt and paved roads.
Fixed Ropes:
Unfortunately, there will not be a fixed ropes section.
Lendal Paddle Demo Program:

All Lendal Demo Paddles have been reserved for this race. Visit www.lendal.com for more details on their products.
